On May 31 Bishop Brennan celebrated Mass at Queen of Peace in honor of the Jubilee of Families, Children, Grandparents and the Elderly which ran from May 30 – June 1.
Bishop Brennan honored the elderly by bringing to light the unique role they play in both the Church and in their individual families.
Today’s families can become so caught up in the day-to-day of busy living causing their religious life to fall the weigh-side. It is the family elders who help instill in their children and grandchildren the importance of – and the need for – a faith-based life. By word and example, they guide their family into a meaningful relationship with God.
At the reception that followed, Bishop Brennan spoke of the need to respect and care for the elderly not only by addressing their physical needs, but by seeking out their wisdom honed over a lifetime of experience. Sadly, we live in an age that dismisses and often ignores the elderly. It is more important now than ever to fight for their rights and to show respect and gratitude for all they have done and still do for society.
Bishop Brennan’s words touched everyone’s heart. The Little Sisters of the Poor have made this their Mission since 1839 when the congregation was initially founded, and those lucky enough to work here take that Mission very seriously.
